Lunch with Students
Fruit Giveaway and Mandarin Exchange
We went sightseeing on Wednesday. The day began with Dim Sum for brunch, then a trip through the Ladies’ Market. We rode the Star Ferry and then came home for Waffle Wednesday. The house was once again filled with hungry college students. We had a lot of last-minute sign-ups for Waffle Wednesday and had to stretch the food, but we felt blessed to have such an overwhelming response! God provided, and waffles were a hit with our new friends.
Thursday started early with a trip to the wet market. The wet market is an indoor market for produce and meat. We stocked up for a fruit giveaway and a weekend of hosting. We loaded an entire rented van with fruit and food. We needed so many mangos that the produce ladies (shopkeepers) mounted a search for extra, and we came away with all we needed.
We took apples and bananas to HKUST in the afternoon. The students don’t get much fruit in the cafeteria, so it made for a welcome outreach. First, we attached tags to the fruit, then loaded it into the wheeled conveyances we could find, and walked to the University. We had a wagon, a cooler, and a handcart of fruit. On the way there, the cooler lost a wheel, and the guys had to carry it the rest of the way. Some students were very thankful for the fruit, while others avoided eye contact and crossed the hall to avoid us. These small things can make a person’s day, and we will wait and pray for “fruit.”
We returned to the house to prepare for the Mandarin English Exchange night. Unlike Waffle Wednesday, this event saw some last-minute cancellations, but was overall well attended. The Americans were to teach the Mandarin speakers how to make apple pie. A few of us needed a quick tutorial on making an apple pie, since we had never made one before. Then we exchanged places, and the Mandarin speakers showed us how to make Joutsa (dumplings/potstickers). We also played a game where we each learned some new phrases in the other’s language. They have much more experience with English than we did with Mandarin. Pray that the fun of this night helped open doors for future conversations about the gospel.
