+ Read Scripture

2 Timothy 3

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation.

Talk Sheet Questions

  1. According to 2 Peter 1:20–21, where does prophecy of Scripture NOT come from, and how does it actually come to us?

  2. In Timothy, what four ways does Paul say Scripture is “profitable”? How does verse 17 say this affects “the man of God”

  3. Why do you think Peter emphasizes that Scripture is like a “lamp shining in a dark place” (2 Peter 1:19)? What does this image teach about our need for Scripture?

  4. Taken together, what do these passages teach about how much authority Scripture should have in what the church believes and how it lives?

  5. When you feel scared or don’t know what to do, how can the Bible be like a flashlight in a dark room to show you the right way (2 Peter 1:19, ESV)? Can you think of a time you’ll use it this week?

  6. How do these truths about the Bible set you up to hear the “One Story” throughout this coming year?
