Hello everyone!
This is probably
our last update from Italy. Today, Tuesday, is our last full day in the
country. We have already had some ministry opportunities, however.
This
morning Pastor Scott, Dan, and I met with a friend of Dan, Sergio, who
owns a pizza restauraunt in Rome. I shared my testimony with him over
coffee. Dan meets with this man regularly. Please pray that God would
continue to use Dan's testimony in this man's life.
Last night was a
late night for the team. Colleen, Tom, and Pastor Scott had dinner with
some friends of Dan and Alice. You can read about them in the previous
update. The dinner went well, but please continue to pray for these
people.
Amanda, Mark (A short-term worker living with the Simmons),
and I spent the evening in Rome. We had a good time walking around and
seeing more of the Italian culture. Every few hundred feet you run into
an enormous church with amazing statues and frescoes. At the same time,
you run into countless numbers of people who are spiritually lost and
trying to find happiness in any means besides the true and living God. It
is a sad and difficult struggle that the evangelical church faces here in
Italy, but we have been encouraged by what God has been doing in these
last two weeks.
Tonight is our farewell dinner with the Simmons and the
church leadership in Ostia. Everyone is sad to leave, but looking forward
to seeing friends and family back home. We have had a wonderful team
experience here, and God has blessed us with tremendous unity.
Thank you
for all your prayers and support. We are excited to be able to share our
experience with you this Sunday. With love and appreciation, Scott
Creps and the Italy Team

Happy Memorial Day,
It has been a memorable day for us, but far from a typical Memorial Day.
Tom spent the day in Rome with Calogero at the Supreme court. The team did some of
their shopping. Pastor Scott made a sacrifical trip to the beach for a visit.
Actually, tonight a very significant appointment will take place at Simmons. Two
different families who are friends of Simmons have asked to meet us. So, their dear
friends Antonio and Anie, and Tiziana are joining us for dinner. Tiziana's father is
dying and we've visited him a couple times in the hospital. Please pray for them.
We have been trying to figure out how in the world we can communicate all that has
happened in our two weeks with those of you who've prayed for us and supported us
financially. We haven't figured it out, but we're eagerly looking forward to trying.
We've been praying for you and appreciate your prayers for us. Thank you. We're
looking forward to seeing you soon.
With love from all, for all,
Pastor Scott

Caro Amici,
We have had an interesting week. One thing is clear each day – the Lord is equipping us for future ministry.
The scriptures we’ve read, the sights we’ve seen, and the conversations we’ve had are all shaping our hearts in ways we don’t even understand now.
The sights of Rome are beautiful, but the context surrounding those sights is very instructive.
Signs of the rise and the fall of the church are everywhere.
As far as the events of the week are concerned I have forgotten the order in which everything has happened, but I’ll try to provide a summary here:
- Mandi might be writing this, but she is away at the beach with two families from the church.
She has been staying with one of them and is a guest this morning of the other.
She’s staying with a 13 year-old girl and has been encouraging her all week.
On Wednesday, she played her flute and sang, accapella, in English at a women’s meeting.
God used this to encourage some Peruvian women who have recently begun to attend the church.
For the first time in about 6 months they took the initiative and offered a song in Spanish.
It was a defining moment for them in their relationship with the church.
Please pray for her to finish as a great encouragement to Serena and to the church.
- Scott has been busy. He did some electrical work for Giulio and spent a day encouraging that brother.
Giulio’s eye is much better. He will still be off work for three weeks.
Scott has the continual job of working with the kids, “ragazzi”. He is staying at Simmons.
Mark Maricle, is also there. Mark wants to be a career missionary to Italy and has been a valuable translator for us.
Scott has had an encouraging ministry with him, too. Scott keeps us current on the connection between the sights we see in Rome and the Catholic theology behind them.
Pray for his work with the “ragazzi” in the next few days.
- Tom’s testimony has been in high demand. His story of not being an active Christian and then having God change his heart to be a servant in the church and the leader of his family has been a great encouragement to the church here.
Last night he hit a home run at a men’s dinner. He may have an opportunity to go to the Roman supreme court on Monday with the lawyer from this church.
Pray for the seed planted by his testimony and for his time with this lawyer.
- Colleen continues to be the most in demand of anyone on our team. Young women and older women alike want appointments with her.
Since the church is primarily women she has a lot of doors open to her. The Italian language has two forms, one formal and the other informal.
They use the formal form with Colleen to show respect to her because of her age.
It is getting warm here, a lot like home, and that is wearing on her a little.
Please pray for her strength.
- As for me, God has encouraged me a great deal. The men at the Bocce club remembered me.
Scott, Tom, Dan and I played a game. I won’t say who won but clearly Dan’s time in Italy prepared him for the competition better than the Oregonians.
Yesterday I met a man who knows friends of mine in the States. It is a small world.
He is the trainer for the Italian national basketball team and has a vision for a Christian basketball camp here in Ostia next year.
I have also had sweet times with Michele & Anna. I have seen both the other churches Michele has started over the past three decades.
I saw him weep as we reviewed photos of the times when he led the pastor of one of those churches to Christ, when they went to Bible school together, and when they started the church together.
In this alone, the investment I made in Italian over the past few months has paid off.
I’ve been encouraged by Dan & Alice. Their faithfulness and sensitive spirit inspire me whenever I see them in action.
And, I’ve been encouraged by each of our team members, by their love for Christ and each other.
I am proud to be their pastor. I feel a little like a father taking his children out in public for the first time, not sure how they’ll behave.
They could not have done better.
Please pray for our ministry on Sunday. (Don’t forget, our Sunday is your Saturday night).
Scott & Amanda have Sunday school duty again and I think Amanda will play her flute again.
I am preaching from Psalm 78:1-8. There is a picnic after church in a park next to a 16th century castle! (There are just some things you can’t do in America!).
We’ve completed our sightseeing for the trip and have a comparatively full schedule, both in Rome and in Ostia, until we leave.
Please pray God would continue to guide our appointments and our speech.
We are praying for you and miss you.
Ciao Tutti,
Pastor Scott

Hi,
This is the third time I've composed this same letter. My i-mail server has kicked me off each time.
So, this may be shorter than my previous attempts and I will copy the text before I hit any buttons.
******************
I have been racing the clock in the internet café but have conceded defeat and am writing again.
The rest of the team is working. They are tearing down the exhibition of the Bible in Italian which was on display at the church the past week.
Sunday was good here. Mandi and Dan played a flute/violin duet which was bellissima!
She and Scott helped with the children in Sunday school. They had done similar work with the older kids on Friday night. Tom, as you might guess, was the greeter.
And, thankfully, people seemed to understand and appreciate the message.
After church we separated for two different Italian dinners.
After ours Mandi said, "I've never eaten so much in my life!"
Colleen shared her testimony there. Oh, she was wonderful.
If you haven't heard her testimony make a point of asking her. You will be glad you did.
Then, she exhorted a younger (67 y.o.) brother in Christ to be baptized.
She was really used by God that day.
Tom has made good friends with the lawyer that is connected with this church.
He is invited to court in Rome sometime this week. How cool is that!
This church has had a hard week. Please pray for them.
The Bible exhibition didn't produce as many contacts as they had hoped.
They had some misunderstandings about the concert they were going to host last Friday that have resulted in a number of hurt feelings and some discontent.
Perhaps most significantly, one of their leaders has spent the week in the hospital.
He had surgery for a detached retina. It was not at all the experience you would expect in the States.
You would not want to spend a week in that hospital either.
He is getting out today, but the family has been very discouraged by this.
We appreciate your prayers. I've never seen five people less affected by jet-lag than we have been.
Thanks to the grace of God. Please continue to pray for us.
Pray, too, for Dan and Alice. They'd only been home a few days before we arrived and were suffering from jet-lag themselves.
They are quite tired.
With faith in Christ and love for you,
Pastor Scott

Hello,
I am writing from an internet café we found earlier in the week.
Today we had an unusual day. It was a cultural history week in Rome so everything was FREE!
Yesterday we got into Ostia Antica for free and today the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Capitoline Museum.
We had our team devotions, get this, in Nero's garden where he lit
Christians on fire to light his parties! Talk about perspective.
Colleen shared with us from 1 Peter 5:8-10. "After you have suffered awhile. . ."
We realized as bad as their suffering was, it did, by historical standards, last only a short time.
And, in reality, Christianity dominate the entire country in just a few short years.
Oh, that God would bring such revival through suffering or not, to Oregon. . . and Italy.
The method of ministry seemed to be adaptation to popular religions.
In addition to appearing to outright borrow some icons and ideas from paganism, the church seemed to accomodate the culture in many ways.
One of the Popes appears to have commissioned art work of ancient Roman mythology.
That seemed odd to me, like a pastor in Oregon commissioning art of American Indian worship perhaps.
Tom, Amanda, and I are waiting for an appointment with the family of the lawyer that Tom met last week.
Please pray for him. This could be a big week for him.
Thank you all for your prayers.
With Love, Pastor Scott

3:37pm PST (12:37am Italy time)
We have just finished our second full day in Italy. We have been much busier than we thought we would be this early, but everyone is excited about what has been happening.
We are all fully engaged in meetings and visits.
On Thursday, Pastor Scott and I (the other Scott) visited a man from the church who is in the hospital having surgery on his eye.
The meeting was very positive and encouraging for everyone. Tom also had the opportunity to visit a person in the hospital as well as connect with a lawyer who is loosely connected to the church.
Tom had a spirited conversation with the lawyer. Colleen also had a few appointments that went well.
We were able to distribute some Bibles to two people who have not accepted Christ as their savior.
Also, we had an informal prayer meeting at the house Amanda is staying at (another very positive sign of the Lord working in people's lives).
On Friday, we spent some time touring the ancient part of Ostia, a city dating back to the 1st century.
In the afternoon Dan and I met with a young man from the church. The appointments have been coming along very well so far.
For a while yesterday, it seemed that the musical for Friday night was going to be cancelled.
There were just too many problems to put it together. However, another church was found to house the musical and it ended up happening.
Thank you for your prayers with this situation!
While Tom and Pastor Scott were at the musical, Amanda and I went to the middle school group meeting.
We had a wonderful time with the 5 kids there. I shared my testimony.
We translated it, but most of the kids knew English very well, and didn't need the translation.
After the meeting, we walked around Ostia for 2 hours with the middle schoolers getting pizza and gelato.
Amanda and I were able to talk to them in English, so that was encouraging for us.
Prayer Requests:
- Please continue to pray that we would make an impact with the people we interact with here in Italy.
Several people have been very open to talking with us, wanting prayer, etc.
- Everyone on the team is doing well, and we ask that you would continue to pray for our health.
- Sunday will be a busy day: Pastor Scott is preaching, Tom is probably giving a testimony on baptism, and Amanda and I are working with the kids.
Please pray that all these go well as there is still much work to do for Sunday.
We miss you all, and thank God for your support.
Love, Your Italy Team

(8:49pm Italy time)
We arrived today, Wednesday, in Italy. Everyone is feeling the effects
of the lack of sleep, and we are looking forward to a good night's rest
. We had a safe journey and enjoyed our first evening in Ostia at Michele
and Anna's house eating pizza. Tomorrow the real work begins.
Right now,
the church is working on two major events. The church is putting on a
musical to be performed outside in a park this Friday, and they are
hoping that it will be a significant outreach event. Also, the church
is currently displaying an exhibit on antique Christian literature.
This is also geared to be a significant outreach.
However, several
complications have come up with these two events. The weather has
not been cooperating with us, and the muscial might have to be cancelled.
As well, there are some issues about getting the appropriate electrical
power for the event. In regards to the Bible exhibit, the church is
not being allowed to publicize the exhibit as they had hoped due to
concerns of the owner of the property. This has greatly reduced the
number of visitors.
Please pray that God would remove these road blocks,
and that many people would have the opportunity to hear the Gospel.

Ciao! As we prepare to leave Tuesday, May 17th, for Ostia, Italy, prayers in
abundance flow from our mouths, to our God who is anxiously listening. We
invite you, as our church family, to pray along with us as we prepare for
this exciting and challenging mission overseas. Some of the things we ask
you to be praying about are:
-Willingness to leave it all behind (work, school, etc.) and go to be
servants, in obedience to Christ.
-Traveling mercies- as the flight is long. That we will rest on this flight
too.
-Health, energy, and focus as we give ourselves to ministry.
-The language barrier (specifically for Dan and Alice being our translators)
-Finances to be in order, and support to continue to come in to cover this
mission trip.
-Our family and friends we will be leaving behind.
-Wholeness as a team, even though we will have separate housing
arrangements. We want to continue to feel connected to on another as a team
even when we are apart from each other.
-Smooth transportation arrangements. (As far as getting from Rome to the
church in Ostia.)
-Full dependency on God- that His will be done in our work and our ministry.
Each day will hold different tasks and opportunities. We appreciate your willingness to follow us on this trip through prayer and
encouragement, as well as your financial support. We look forward to sending
updates regularly, and reporting back to you on the 5th of June.
We've done what we can here in our preparation for this mission, now we look
forward to seeing God do the rest.
God bless you all!
Italy team
